A Bioreactor is a vessel or container which is used to hold organisms for the purpose of harnessing their natural biochemical processes.In other words a Bioreactor is a system that creates an artificial environment for photosynthetic organisms (algae) to perform a chemical conversion.

 

IKA® BR 10
The BR 10 is a 10 liter bioreactor for use in the cultivation of cells by simulating optimum controlled conditions. The stirrer provides laminar agitation for oxygen transfer and to mix nutrients while keeping fermentation homogeneous. The BR 10 has a self contained lighting system that provides efficient illumination for the photosynthesis process.

A simple yet functional control system is conveniently located below the glass vessel for ease of operation and results in an exceptionally small foot print. The HMI (Human Machine Interface) for the control software is easy to read and operate. After the initial pH and temperature parameters are entered, the controller illuminates the fluorescent bulbs based on set temperature and time. Luminosity can be reduced by activating only 2 or 4 of the 6 lamps. Constant air is bubbled through a glass-fritted sparger tube and a control valve activates to mix the air with carbon dioxide to control the pH at setpoint. The flow rates will be controlled by needle valves and rotameters.

 

Bio Reactor

The unit has an Ethernet connection which enables the monitoring of temperature, pH and stirrer speed. The monitoring is achieved by using the provided software which allows for real-time monitoring or the data can be collected in a file which then can be used with graphing software.

One unique feature is no metal is exposed to the wetted surfaces inside the vessel making this system ideal for instances where bio-reactants are a problem such as with algae. All wetted parts are autoclavable. The glass vessel is fully jacketed on the sides and bottom enabling even heat distribution when connected to a temperature controlled circulating bath. The circulating bath is required to maintain the temperature of the vessel. A PT-100 PTFE coated temperature probe is provided for monitoring the temperature in the vessel. The PTFE encapsulated stirring rod with its two adjustable PTFE 4-blade propellers are driven by a removable in-line DC motor that has a coupler for easy removal. The system comes with a glass pH probe for measuring the pH in the vessel. The vessel cover/lid is made from glass filled Ultem, which is an enigineered polymer that is inert to cell cultivation. It has additional ports for sampling, inoculating and extracting. Two peristaltic pumps will be provided for the possibility of removing culture liquid and/or adding fresh medium as a chemostat configuration.

As an option we plan to offer a turbidity probe to provide turbidity measurements for comparison against know values.
